Canada’s 150th anniversary is upon us, and we’re celebrating in a big way! We hope you’ll help us ring in this exciting milestone with a huge patchwork Canadian flag!

That’s right – we’re making a great big flag and we need your help to knit, crochet, weave, and felt red and white squares! It doesn’t matter if you’ve been crocheting for years or just learned to knit – everyone is welcome to join!

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • 6-inch by 6-inch squares
  • made in either red or white solid (or tonal) materials – please don’t use red and white in the same square!
  • can be knit, crochet, woven, or even felted – it’s up to you!

Any yarn that fits the bill is welcome – feel free to use old stash yarns, hold two or three strands together for a quick bulky knit, or play with fibers like rafia and paper!

We need roughly 70 red and 30 white squares for our giant flag, plus a couple of custom-size squares for the maple leaf! (Ask us for more details if you’re interested in tackling a custom-size square!) We’ll need these squares to arrive in the shop by Friday, June 23rd, in order to give us enough time to assemble them!

We’ve pulled together a couple of free patterns for anyone who wants to make something more exciting than a simple square!

What better way is there to celebrate 150 years of Canadian community than coming together to make a fabulous, fiber-ific flag? Happy birthday Canada!
