Scrappy Everything Mitts

Who doesn't love a pair of stylish fingerless mitts? They look great in the off-seasons (e.g., fall and spring) and are great for those warmer winter days too! Plus, your hands are free for texting! Made of sock yarn, these gloves are a great way to use leftover sock yarn or to use up the colour skein of sock yarn you just don't know what to do with!

prerequisites

Participants need to be able to cast on and to do both knit and purl stitches. Experience knitting in the round with double-pointed needles is an asset, but not necessary, as we can show you how to do it. If you already know how to knit in the round using the magic loop method, you can do that too. However, we will not be teaching magic loop in this class.

what you will learn

You will learn how to make mitts, without having to knit all the way to the top of your fingers! You will create gussets for your thumbs, learning how to do Make 1 Right (M1R) and Make 1 Left (M1L) increases. You will be shown how to put your stitches on waste yarn and how to pick them up to knit later. You will learn how to do a sewn bind-off (e.g., the Italian bind-off) and how to weave in your ends neatly, for a professional finish!

what to bring

You will be making scrappy mittens, and there will be sock yarn scraps provided! However, if you prefer to bring your own skein of sock yarn, you can do that too. The pattern designer recommends solid colours, speckled colours, blocks of colour or stripey yarn. The choice is yours! You will need 2.25 mm double-pointed knitting needles, if you plan to use DPN's. You will need a 2.25 mm circular needle with at least a 32" cable, if you are using the magic loop method. A small tool kit (e.g., with stitch markers, a tapestry needle and scissors) is recommended too.
