The Biches & Bûches Le Gros Silk & Mohair is the finest blend of 28% Mulberry Silk and 72% Super Kid Mohair. It is the same type of yarn as finer blends, just much thicker, for another kind of texture and different result.
With Le Gros Silk & Mohair we have a Silk & Mohair thread that can easily be worked single!
It is a very soft kind of wool, warm and really light. It can be chosen for different kinds of projects like sweaters, cardigans, blankets, shawls, and more.
The mohair comes from South Africa and the silk from China in this wool.
We have been guaranteed that all suppliers respect international agreements on the well-treatment of the animals.
The mohair obtained from the first shearing of a baby angora goat is viewed as the most exclusive and luxurious type of mohair. As we shared above, young sheep have finer hair, and their first shearing yields an extremely soft and smooth fabric. This mohair is referred to as kid mohair.
silk
Silk is a natural protein fiber, produced by certain insect larvae when forming coccoons. The best known silk is obtained from the larvae of the mulberry silkworm. To produce 1 kg of silk, 104 kg of mulberry leaves must be eaten by 3000 silkworms. As a fibre, silk is smooth and soft, and it is one of the strongest natural fibres. It has excellent drape, but no elasticity the way that wool does.
🍁 about wabi sabi 🍁
We are a proudly Canadian, independently-owned, women-run local yarn store based in Ottawa, Ontario. Our focus is on natural fibres and yarns, and we love to help promote and support Canadian producers and makers. Most of our products are of Canadian and European origin, and we do our best to work with distributors at home and abroad to find products that are of excellent quality while also being affordable, sustainable, and responsibly produced.
'wabi sabi' is a Japanese aesthetic term which focusses on recognizing and embracing the beauty of the unfinished, the imperfect and the impermanent. There is no English synonym, and we use it with respect for its roots.
