Knitting for Olive Soft Silk Mohair is a luxurious blend of the finest Kid Mohair and Mulberry silk.

Our Mohair comes from angora goats bred in South Africa, and the yarn is also produced locally. Our yarns are traceable back to the individual farms, which means we know exactly which farms, farmers, and goats our wool comes from.

Our Mohair is certified sustainable and RMS (Responsible Mohair Standard). The yarn is produced with high respect for animal wellbeing, and with social responsibility. Our spinning mill follows ethical, technical and environmental standards, creating yarns free from harmful chemicals.

The Silk in our Soft Silk Mohair is cruelty free. The silk fibres are collected from cocoons after the chrysalises are allowed to mature into moths and escape. This means that the silk worms are not killed in the process as they are in conventional silk production.

If knit on its own, this yarn is a lace weight. It is also perfectly suited to be a companion yarn to another strand. It will add little in terms of thickness to the knitted gauge, but will add a gorgeous sheen and fluffiness to the finished product.

The yarn is STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certified.

Every item bearing the STANDARD 100 label is certified as having passed safety tests for the presence of harmful substances. For our purposes, this is likely to refer to the dyes that are used on fibres and yarns.

Silk is a natural protein fiber, produced by certain insect larvae when forming coccoons. The best known silk is obtained from the larvae of the mulberry silkworm. To produce 1 kg of silk, 104 kg of mulberry leaves must be eaten by 3000 silkworms. As a fibre, silk is smooth and soft, and it is one of the strongest natural fibres. It has excellent drape, but no elasticity the way that wool does.

kid mohair

The mohair obtained from the first shearing of a baby angora goat is viewed as the most exclusive and luxurious type of mohair. As we shared above, young sheep have finer hair, and their first shearing yields an extremely soft and smooth fabric. This mohair is referred to as kid mohair.
