Darnie is Studio Donegal's take on the classic Irish tweed yarn: 100% lambswool with the characteristic tweed flecks that give Donegal yarn its distinctive, storied look. Lambswool is notably softer than standard wool, so despite the rustic appearance it's more comfortable next to skin than many tweeds. The tweed flecks add depth and visual complexity to even simple stitch patterns, and the generous 410m at 100g makes it practical for sweaters and larger projects. Not superwash treated; hand wash and dry flat. For anyone who wants the look and character of traditional Irish knitwear without sacrificing wearability.
rooted in tradition and rich with character
Darnie is a yarn that we would categorize as a storyteller. The Storyteller carries the echoes of older traditions. These yarns come from heritage fibres, time-honoured spinning methods, and colour palettes shaped by generations of makers. Working with them connects today’s projects to the long, shared history of textile craft.
Storytellers are often a little rustic by nature. They may feel more “sheepy” than modern processed yarns and can be better suited to outerwear or layered garments if you have sensitive skin. Give them the care they deserve: swatch thoughtfully and follow laundering instructions.

yarn questions:
How should I care for this yarn?
What is this yarn suitable for?
What yarn weight is this?
What needle size works best for this yarn?
Which knitting stitch patterns work best with this yarn?
How do I make a basic gauge swatch for this yarn?
Using 3.25 mm (US 3) needles (or whatever your pattern recommends), cast on 10 stitches. Knit 6 rows. Repeat the following 2 rows until the work measures 3":
- knit 3, purl to the last 3 stitches, knit 3
- knit all stitches
Knit 6 more rows and cast off. Wash and block using the same method you will use for the finished item. Measure and count your gauge across the middle stitches of the swatch.
