What is Wabi Sabi?
Wabi Sabi is an independently owned, women-run local yarn store located in Ottawa, Ontario. We specialize in natural fibre yarns and supplies for knitting, crochet, weaving, and spinning. We’re proudly Canadian and prioritize products from Canadian and European makers, with a focus on quality, sustainability, and affordability.
Where are you located and what are your hours?
We’re at 1078 Wellington Street West, Ottawa, ON, K1Y 2Y3.
Our hours are:
- Monday–Wednesday: 11am–5pm
- Thursday: 11am–7pm
- Friday: 11am–5pm
- Saturday: 10am–5pm
- Sunday: 12pm–5pm

What does 'wabi sabi' mean?
'Wabi Sabi' is a Japanese aesthetic term which focusses on recognizing and embracing the beauty of the unfinished, the imperfect and the impermanent. We use it with respect for its roots, and feel it does an excellent job of summarizing our approach to handcrafting.

Products & Brands

What kinds of products do you carry?
We carry yarn, fibre for spinning, knitting needles and crochet hooks, accessories, equipment, books, patterns, and kits. We focus on natural fibres and source primarily from Canadian and European producers.
What brands do you carry?
Our selection changes regularly, but some of the lines we’re known for include:
Knitting for Olive: a Danish brand beloved for its soft, high-quality yarns in a beautiful range of colours
Malabrigo: a Uruguayan yarn known for its hand-dyed, exceptionally soft single-ply and kettle-dyed yarns
Jamieson & Smith: a Shetland Islands producer specializing in traditional Shetland wool, ideal for colourwork and Fair Isle knitting
Canadian independent dyers: we carry yarns from local and Canadian indie dyers including Alley Cat Yarns and Riverside Yarns on a seasonal basis
Ashford: We also carry (or can special order) a full range of Ashford spinning and weaving equipment and supplies.
Do you carry locally made or Canadian products?
Yes — supporting Canadian producers and makers is important to us. We actively seek out Canadian indie dyers and carry a dedicated Canadian collection. Look for the 🍁 Canadian section on our website or in store.
Do you do special orders?
Yes. If you’re looking for something specific that we don’t have in stock, get in touch at info@wabi-sabi.ca and we’ll do our best to source it for you.

Shopping & Shipping

Do you have an online store?
Yes — our full inventory is available at wabi-sabi.ca. You can shop online and choose either shipping or in-store pickup at checkout.
Do you ship across Canada?
Yes, we ship Canada-wide. Our flat rate is $15, and shipping is free on orders over $175. We ship every other weekday.
How quickly will my order ship?
We process and ship orders on alternating weekdays. If you need your order sooner, in-store pickup is usually the fastest option.
Do you offer in-store pickup?
Yes — local pickup is available and is often the fastest way to get your order. As long as the item is in stock and we’re open, your order is typically ready within an hour of placing it online.
Do you ship outside Canada?
We currently ship within Canada only.
Can I reach your store by public transit?
Yes, we're right on OC Transpo route 11. The closest stop to us is "Melrose".
Is there parking nearby?
Street parking is available on Wellington Street West and on adjacent side streets (note that side street parking is time-limited). We don’t have a dedicated parking lot.
Is the store wheelchair accessible?
Our main entrance is not wheelchair accessible, but we’re happy to accommodate — we can open our rear entrance off Melrose Avenue. Please call ahead at (613) 725-5648 so our staff can be ready to help you.
I’m buying a gift for someone who knits/crochets. Can you help?
Absolutely. Our staff are happy to help non-crafters find a thoughtful gift, whether that’s a specific yarn, a kit, a book, or a gift card. Come in and ask, or reach out at info@wabi-sabi.ca and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Do you accept credit cards?
Yes — we accept all major credit cards.
Do you buy used yarn or equipment?
No, we don’t purchase second-hand yarn or equipment.
I have yarn, equipment or supplies I’d like to donate. Any suggestions?
We’re unable to accept yarn donations, but local schools, shelters, and retirement homes are often grateful for crafting supplies and worth contacting directly.

Help & Classes

Do you offer yarn winding?
Yes — we can wind yarn purchased from us into cakes for $2 per ball. Winding must be requested at the time of purchase. If you’re ordering online, you can add the winding service to your order here: Yarn Winding Service
I’m stuck on a project. Can you help?
Yes — we’re happy to help with small troubleshooting questions in store during regular hours. You’re also welcome to email us at info@wabi-sabi.ca with questions about yarn selection, pattern interpretation, or project-specific advice. We do our best to respond helpfully.

What classes do you offer?
We offer a range of classes in knitting and crochet, from beginner Introduction to Knitting, Introduction to Crochet through more advanced techniques. Classes are taught by experienced instructors and run regularly throughout the year. View all current classes →
I’ve never knit or crocheted before. Where do I start?
Our Introduction to Knitting and Introduction to Crochet classes are designed specifically for beginners — no experience needed. Check our current class schedule to find an upcoming session that works for you.
Is there a minimum age for classes?
Yes — our classes are designed for adults, and we require participants to be at least 14 years old. Younger learners have different educational needs that are better served in a dedicated youth setting that we’re currently unable to offer.
