Silk Yak Fingering is hand-dyed by Alley Cat Yarns, a local Ottawa indie dyer, in a superwash merino, silk, and yak blend that covers a lot of ground. The merino provides the familiar bounce and softness of a quality sock base; the silk adds sheen, drape, and a cool smoothness; and the yak: often underappreciated: contributes a quiet warmth and a subtle softness that's distinctly its own. Hand-dyed in small batches, so colours vary between dyelots: buy enough for your project at one time. Excellent for socks, shawls, and any fingering-weight project where you want the yarn to be noticed.
indulgent fibres with excellent manners
Silk yak fingering is a yarn that we would categorize as a polite hedonist. A polite hedonist loves luxury but keeps its manners. These yarns are made from indulgent fibres that feel wonderful to work with and create soft, wearable fabrics: luxury that behaves itself beautifully.
Still worth a proper introduction: swatch before committing, especially when substituting. And when it comes time to wash, treat finished pieces gently so the fibres can stay at their best.

What is this yarn suitable for?
Is this yarn superwash treated?
What yarn weight is this?
What needle size works best for this yarn?
Which knitting stitch patterns work best with this yarn?
How do I make a basic gauge swatch for this yarn?
Using 2.50 mm (US 1.5) - 3.50 mm (US 4) needles (or whatever your pattern recommends), cast on 10 stitches. Knit 6 rows. Repeat the following 2 rows until the work measures 3":
- knit 3, purl to the last 3 stitches, knit 3
- knit all stitches
Knit 6 more rows and cast off. Wash and block using the same method you will use for the finished item. Measure and count your gauge across the middle stitches of the swatch.
